Fulbright-Hays Seminar in Brazil

Fulbright-Hays Program

The Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries, through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills. You can find more information at http://www.cies.org/about_fulb.htm.

Seminar Description
The program, entitled “Seminar on Cultural Diversity and Social Change in Brazil,” will provide a short-term study/travel opportunity to improve the knowledge and understanding of South America in general and Brazil in particular. It is designed to provide educators with interdisciplinary knowledge and skills necessary to internationalize the curriculum, increase study abroad opportunities for students at the home institutions, and promote multicultural awareness.

Seminar Objectives
This project will focus on the interrelationship between tradition and change in the context of Brazil. Academic and cultural learning will be interwoven with lectures, presentations, workshops, meetings, travel, guided tours, and other activities. The seminar will deal with challenges to economic development, explore the relationship between culture and social structure, and enable participants to gain insights into the contributions of Brazilians in the areas of art, architecture, music, dance, and drama. Major sites to be visited will include Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Manaus, Recife, Salvador, and Rio de Janeiro.
